the story

My story

This was the first tractor that I purchased. I intended for it to be a utility tractor but I quickly realized how impractical it is compared to the modern tractors I have access to. I still use it for pulling things and doing utility work that doesn't require a loader. This was the first tractor I went on a tractor ride on.

Amongst the list of things that have been done to this tractor, one of the previous owners put a combine engine in it. The cover where a fuel pump used to be installed is the biggest giveaway. Likely out of a Gleaner E which used a very similar engine but rated with more horsepower. Also very similar to the engine used in the later D17. The stock engine is a W226 and it currently has a G226 engine. Thanks to this I don't really know how much power my tractor is actually making. I assume the governor is still set to 1400 rpm which is correct for this tractor, but the Gleaner E was rated for 1800rpm. My best guess is that I have between 50 and 60hp. It could be as high as 65hp though. The full flow oiling system is also another giveaway. My tractor runs about 35psi oil pressure with the G226. The W226 used a bypass oiling system that only made around 15psi. I have updated the hydraulic system as well to be more useful with modern equipment although the low hydraulic flow and capacity are a limiting factor.

restoration

The restoration

I don't intend to do a full restoration on this tractor. I just think Allis Chalmers look better with some patina. I do intend to continue keeping it in great mechanical condition though. Adding power steering and rebuilding the cylinder head are amongst my plans for this tractor eventually.

history

History

The Allis Chalmers WD45 was the predecessor to the WD. With and extra 5 hp and a number of upgrades it was slightly more expensive at $2400 when it was released. Over 90,000 WD45 tractors were built. This may have been Allis Chalmers' most iconic tractor. This tractor was available with many different fuel options being from the 1950s. There were option for engines running gasoline, diesel, LP, and tractor fuel. The WD45 was intended to be the main tractor on the farm for many medium size farms. Big enough to pull a 3 or 4 bottom plow and small enough to do utility work. This tractor did everything that a farmer might need a tractor to do. The WD45 also introduced the snap coupler system. A competitor to the modern 3 point that never caught on, the snap coupler allowed farmers to change implements in a matter of seconds. Allis Chalmers had a wide variety of snap coupler attachments  available. The system even found its way onto some other brands of tractors. Although very rare, the John Deere B had a factory snap coupler option. Allis Chalmers eventually released the D series tractors to replace the WD45 in 1957.
